GCSE Excellence continues at Porthcawl Comprehensive School

We are delighted with the outstanding results achieved by our students at Porthcawl Comprehensive School.  All students should be incredibly proud of their justly deserved achievements resulting from all their hard work, dedication, and commitment.  It has been wonderful for students, staff, and families to celebrate this examination success as students prepare to embark on their future studies and next steps.

Congratulations to all our staff who have worked tirelessly as always in supporting our students with steadfast dedication.  Also, many thanks to our families for their continued support to the school and in helping to prepare their children for their examinations.  These results represent many hours of work and commitment from students, staff, and families, and I would like to pass on my sincere best wishes to everyone!

It gives all at PCS a real sense of pride seeing the young people in our community rewarded for their hard work.  Our students have achieved some excellent results and we are very pleased that we have been able to share this day with them.  These outstanding results are testament to the hard work of students and teachers and follow Porthcawl’s year-on-year trend of strong GCSE performance – well done to all associated!

As with many year groups, Year 11’s time in secondary education was impacted by the pandemic, with significant disruption experienced during Key Stage 3.  Following this they have shown so much resilience determination and commitment as they worked towards the summer 2023 examination series.  The evidence of this is certainly clear today!

I wish all Year 11 students the absolute best as they begin their next steps and commence their Post 16 pathway whether it be, A Levels in the Sixth Form at Porthcawl Comprehensive School, vocational courses at Bridgend College, an apprenticeship, a traineeship, or employment.

Our provisional GCSE results show that over 75% of our students achieved at least five or more GCSEs graded at A*-C including English and Mathematics.  87% of students achieved five or more GCSEs graded at A*-C and importantly all pupils left school with a recognised qualification.  Our Capped 9 score (a student’s best nine GCSEs including English, Maths and Science) along with the school’s points scores in Literacy Numeracy and Science were once again excellent.

An incredible, near 40% of our students achieved at least five or more A*-A grades.  In Literacy, 89% of students were awarded an A*-C grade.   In Numeracy, 78% of students were awarded an A*-C grade.  In Science, 82% of students were awarded an A*-C grade.  In the core subjects alone approximately 40% of all grades achieved were graded at A*/A.

Our Year 10 students have also completed a small number of GCSEs this year and their performance in these must be celebrated.  Everyone at PCS is immensely proud of their early achievements, there were some excellent module results achieved in a number of different subjects.  In addition, nearly all students in Year 10 sat their full GCSE in English Literature this year.  In this subject, over 95% of students achieved a grade A*-C and nearly 40% of students secured an A*-A grade.  The results achieved provide a very strong foundation for GCSE success in summer 2024 – my sincere congratulations!

I look forward to September as we welcome approximately 75% of our Year 11 cohort along with a number of new students into the Sixth Form at PCS.  We are pleased that you have chosen to continue your journey at Porthcawl Comprehensive School.

On behalf of the Governing Body, I would like to extend congratulations to all staff and students on a truly remarkable year of academic success.

Best wishes,

Mr Stephens

Headteacher
