Sports Day 2023

Porthcawl Comprehensive School Sports Day 2023 proved to be a resounding success, with over 300 pupils eagerly leaving their classrooms to gather on six coaches that journeyed down the M4 motorway to Swansea University Athletics Stadium. The day was filled with remarkable athletic performances, showcasing the outstanding talents and dedication of our students.

Athletes competed in a wide range of events, from the sprints of 100m to the endurance challenges of the 1500m, and from the graceful long jump to the powerful shot put. The standard of competition reached unprecedented levels this year, and the enthusiasm and sportsmanship displayed were truly inspiring.
Across all year groups, we witnessed exceptional performances and a strong commitment to the house system. Among the Year 7 competitors, Will Sealey and Jacob Wasbourne shone as they secured double gold medals in the 100m & 200m, and 800m & 1500m, respectively. A standout moment in the Year 7 competition was Tyler Woodward’s astounding feat, breaking the Yr7 shot put record with an impressive 10m 50cm throw.

In Year 8, Poppy Cole lived up to her name, hopping, skipping, and jumping her way to a new school record in the girls’ triple jump—an impressive achievement for a Year 8 pupil, and we have no doubt she will continue to dominate this event in the coming years, setting new records along the way.
The Year 9 students proved their mettle with outstanding achievements from Alex Evans, excelling in the 400m, Javelin, and discus events, and Bethan Deeks, showcasing her talents in the 200m, 300m, and Long Jump. Both athletes’ clean sweep in their respective events put them in the running for the prestigious Victor Ludorum and Victrix Ludorum awards. We must also recognize Lewis Hollenbach, the fittest prop forward in Porthcawl, who achieved an extraordinary double win in the 800m and 1500m events.

The Year 10 students, competing in their final Sports Day, created lasting memories with Paige Jenkins securing a new year record in the triple jump and Welsh International Iwan Froley accomplishing the same feat in the 1500m event. However, it was Mason Habberley Warner who dazzled the audience with his multi-event prowess, claiming victories in the javelin, 400m, and 200m, putting him in contention for the highly-coveted Victor Ludorum award.
After carefully tallying the scores, it was evident that Bethan Deeks was the clear winner of the Victrix Ludorum award, amassing an impressive 24 points for her house with three first-place finishes. As for the Victor Ludorum award, it was a tie between Mason Habberley Warner and Alex Evans, both securing three wins and contributing 24 points to their respective houses.

The day was not only about the outstanding athleticism but also about the positive attitudes and sportsmanship displayed by all participants. We were proud to see everyone representing their houses with pride and giving their best efforts throughout the day.

In conclusion, Porthcawl Comprehensive School Sports Day 2023 was a tremendous success, showcasing some of the best school athletics seen in years. The level of dedication, talent, and sportsmanship exhibited by our students was truly commendable. We sincerely hope that all participants enjoyed the experience and are eager to return next year to continue representing their houses. Every individual involved was a credit to the school.
